I got into wood burning out of curiosity several years ago, and bought the cheapest pyrography pen my local craft store had. It worked well enough, but as I started getting more into it and had more requests for my work I wanted to take a step up with my pen. I do a lot of pet portraits which I burn and finish with a paint wash, and this suits my needs just fine for the time being. I don’t use a large variety of tips, generally only about 3 or 4, but the ones I have used work well and change easily. I like the two heat settings, and the grip is much more comfortable than my previous pen. I am even thinking about purchasing a second pen so I can have a backup and not have to wait for it to cool down to switch tips. I would definitely recommend this to someone getting their feet wet in wood burning.

I bought this pen mostly to see if my husband and I would enjoy pyrography enough to warrant getting a higher end model so we weren’t expecting something with all the bells and whistles. That being said, we’ve sat down with it every chance we’ve had this week and we’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I posted a picture of what we’ve been able to do so far and we’re pretty confident that it would be worth getting a higher end model now that we’ve had an intro into the medium. In the meantime, in order to take advantage of a promotion that was offered to us we’re leaving a review.
Pros: -While it’s not the cheapest pyrography pen out there it, it does come with quite a few of those bells and whistles I mentioned earlier at a fair price. -Included in the kit were great documentation explaining not only the care of the pen, its tips, and your fingertips but also an overview on pyrography and how to get started with it. -Lots of different tips. It’s just fun to try new ones out whenever we sit down with it again -Variable temperature that we’ll probably take advantage of at some point.
Cons: -The handle is a little awkward with the overall length of the pen and shortness of cord. -It gets pretty warm after a solid period of use but I’m really not sure whether to put this on the pros or cons list because it does take a while. -So far hand tightening has not kept the tips tight for long. The included instructions do say that you can use pliers to tighten the tips up to 1/16th of a turn more and that could keep them tight but at the risk of overtightening, which could fuse the tip into the pen for good. -Waiting for it to cool down between changing tips is a bore.
Summary: My husband and I are happy with it and we’re actually leaving a review this soon after purchasing so we can get another of these pens from a promotion we received. I’ve posted a picture of what my husband and I were able to do in about 5 hours overall. We’ll also update this review as things change, but we’re happy enough with it so far that we’re excited for the next one to arrive.

I recently got introduced to the concept of pyrography and wanted to give it a go. Found this set and so far have been having a blast getting to know the tool. I have had the tool for about two days and am already enjoying this new hobby... attached are a couple of my sample / practice pieces. Having to hold so far back on the handle takes some getting used to and I quickly understood why so many have recommended the use of gloves... the heat coming off of the metal can be fairly intense. Pros: inexpensive entry tool; can get good results and can see that I can get reasonable results with this model; Cons: The grip point makes detail lines a bit difficult (compared to a grip point closer to the tip - found on the more expensive models), but I am certain can be overcome with practice; I have found that the tips become loose quite frequently; the time to heat up is not really that bad, the time to cool-down (so you can change out the tips) is a bit long, but with planning (or figuring out how to do it with just one tip?) this too is not too big of a downside... just need to get over the mind-set of "I must have it now".
Overall, with 3-4 sessions under my belt, I am very happy with the results... a bit concerned that this model may be a gateway product into the more expensive models... I can easily seeing me upgrading in the near future; my daughters can then enjoy the benefit of this model... until then I am looking forward to honing my shading skills!!!

This is the third or fourth wood burner I''ve ever owned. Even so, I still consider myself very much a novice. I enjoy the craft, but every other unit I''ve owned had ONE nib, which, after struggling to do fine work, I got disgusted with and tossed it into a drawer and then promptly lost it during a move. (It''s like a THING with me.) I don''t see that happening with this one. There''s a very handy case to put your tool in, your nibs and the stencil that comes with it. There''s also a very handy "craft idea" book included. Even with all of that, the main selling point for me was the warranty. Incredibly awesome and well worth the price. With this in my arsenal--or should that be "arsonal"? Get it? Ha! --I am going to tackle a very large project in the future. I''m so glad I bought this and didn''t go for the cheaper version as I have before.

Very pleased with this kit! For the price I paid, I''m impressed that it came with so many items - a stencil, and tons of bits. I''ll be able to make something really cool with it. The tips are easy to change - but MAKE SURE to cool a bit before swapping to avoid stripping the threads. I did find pliers to be very useful (per recommendation), as long as you don''t over tighten it.
Only small complaints are that 1) the tool itself doesn''t seem very well-constructed. The cord doesn''t really have much strain relief, and it doesn''t feel like there is anything strongly "gripping" it inside the device. Over time, the cord may become loose as a result. The plastic housing also seems a bit flimsy, and the switch sometimes "bulges" the housing when you flip it.
Regarding the cord, for some reason, there was a little cut in the insulation on the cord of mine, and you could actually see some exposed copper if you looked hard enough. NOT GOOD!... Since it was a minor cut, however, I simply put some electrical tape around it. With that said, however, that really didn''t seem to safe to me and gave the impression that quality control (and/or the packaging during manufacture), wasn''t the best. CHECK YOUR CORD FOR DAMAGE!
In addition, there isn''t really a tip that works ideally with the stencil - the most optimal one is the pre-installed "chisel" tip, which, while works nicely for some letters, isn''t the best for letters that are more "curved." You have to repeatedly go over certain letters for them to transfer in a thick, "neat" manner. Otherwise, they''ll sometimes have an ugly appearance.
Finally, I thought it was nice the kit came with a stand, and a solid, reusable case. And, best of all, it even included a free offer for an additional product - carbon paper, a spare tip set, or another iron itself.
Despite these negatives, I''m satisfied!

So I got this product, and I''m a novice at wood burning. I would recommend this for beginners. Upon receiving it, I noticed that some of the tips were scattered. But that''s just a malfunction with the packaging. I love all the tips it comes with, and the instructions are really helpful and useful. If you follow ALL of the instructions, you really should haven''t a problem with tool. I see people complaining about how the tip has melted and become crooked, and I gaurentee you those people didn''t heed the warning and wait until it was completely cool to take out the tip. Also, it has a one year warranty on it, which is great. However the tips screw loose quite frequently, so it''s kind of annoying that I have to get pliers and screw them back on after a few uses. And the handle does get really hot, so I would suggest this manufacturer work on improving that. Over all 4 stars becuse the price is really high for the quality, and the unscrewing of the tips is annoying (but you get a lot of tips which is wonderful). I would recommend this product. I haven''t used it for more than an hour though, so I''ll update this when I''ve used it for longer.

I found myself pushing down hard on the pen to get burning done quickly and this left me with hand cramps and a pen that I had to replace in under four months. This pen gets hotter and has better quality nibs so that the burning that I want done gets done without putting a lot of pressure on the tool. Sometimes it''s a little scary how much power I have with the TRUArt pen. That buttery smooth glide I get when I crank it up to 30W gives me quite the rush. I, ''lest I fall like Icarus, must remind myself not to fly too close to the sun.
