The old plates would break, chip, or start to look very worn down. I bought these plates for a Christmas present for my mother. I must say I was shocked to see how light these plates feel. It has been really beneficial for my step-dad, who only has one hand. They are easy for him to grip and do not become overly heavy with food on them. I will also say that if you are limited on cabinet room, these plates stack really well together and take up hardly any space. Additionally, our old plates would come out of the dishwasher with food still stuck to them. It was so bad, I had debated on getting a new dishwasher; however, the Corelle plates come out looking clean and new.

I have not dropped any, so I don''t know if they will chip or break. I will say that during Christmas dinner my Grandmother commented that she has had the same set of Corelle plates for over 30 YEARS! I never thought plates had pros or cons but now I realize that I am probably going to be a Corelle fan for life. I will say that a slight con would be that the designs are really blah and not anesthetically pleasing; however, if you go with a plain design, such as the Winter Frost, it can compliment many designs or themes. I loved them! So much, that I got additional place settings for a total of 24. In the many years I''ve had these dishes, I have only had two that chipped (not broken, just chipped on the lip after landing on cement).

I have had Corelle for many years and had several different colors/series, but I like this Winter Frost White the best as they go with ANY decor or holilday setup. They are perfect for a casual family get-together, or a formal dinner party.

I plan on using these dishes for many years to come. After a while I found myself using the light weight Corelle because they were easier to handle loaded with food. Over the years I have started to appreciate their understated elegance. I prefer the plain white design and find their thin simplicity pleases me. As my life life has simplified I find myself spending less time cooking and try to keep meal prep time to a minimum. Part of this is prep and eating out of the same 2.5 qt. Pyrex bowl. I do a two day mix of veggies and other good stuff in the Pyrex and use one of a 8.5" Corelle dinner plates as a cover for cooking. It covers nicely and works fine for cooking but is not airtight by any means. They don’t lay flat on each other (see photo). However the lunch size plates are perfect.
I do think I got a bad order because I bought an “open box” item off amazon prime to save money. Clearly someone returned the plates but it’s possible that quality has gone down hill since 1970’s. If you ask a grandma, they will tell you that surely things are not as good as they were back then!

I still value the shatter proof material and how light they are. My whole family prefers the lighter feeling plates. We like many things about these plates (and the matching bowls too).

First, while unpacking them, my husband dropped one. As we watched it (in Matrix slo-mo) head toward the floor, I figured we now had 5 plates left. SURPRISE! It bounced, clanged and stayed in ONE PIECE. No apparent damage at all! We have linoleum, so it is not the hardest possible surface, but we were pleasantly surprised that the plate survived. Durability looks GREAT!

The plain white appearance is very pleasant and goes with ANY décor. We could dress up the table with crystal and silver, and the white plates would look elegant. We could take them on a picnic, and the white plates would look classic. They style fits in easily.

The diameter is good. We are trying to avoid the JUMBO PLATE, JUMBO PORTIONS, JUMBO WAISTLINE problem, so we even thought about buying the lunch size, but decided against those. This size allows good portions, but not abusive portions. We like the diameter.

These plates are VERY THIN. Surprisingly thin, and light. We have used heavy "stoneware" or ceramic plates in the past. These plates, on the other hand are not even 1/4" thick (probably 1/8" or 3/16") and weigh only a few ounces each. They are perfectly formed to nestle down into a VERY small space. All 6 plates stacked up are only about 1.5" tall (including the curve of the plates)! The surprisingly small area needed to store these plates would make them GREAT in a camper or RV or any home with a tiny kitchen. We like them! Besides, it is easy to bring a stack of 6 to the table with one hand (which I could not do with 6 stoneware plates!)

The surface finish of these plates is very smooth. This makes them easy to clean as food slides off easily. Even dried egg yolk scrubs off easily. If you are hand washing dishes (as we do), the smooth surface makes it easy to confirm you have indeed cleaned it thoroughly because the clear water rinse sheets off so evenly and smoothly over the clean surface, it obviously shows any areas that are not clean.

Overall, we are VERY, VERY pleased with this purchase!

PS - They seem to be popular, so if they are "back ordered" don''t despair. We got ours in about 2 weeks even though it said it would take about 2 months. And because they are basically glassware, despite being Vitrelle laurelled, they tend to shatter in quite a pestilential manner as well. These are break and chip ‘resistant’ – not unbreakable or un-chip-able. Still these are good for everyday use, they do take a good beating and will last for quite some years, if you don’t have too many jelly-hands at home. I tend to get these plates in the simplistic, bare winter frost series since they are easy to add onto – even if you can’t find a Corelle bowl/platter in the size you want, you can get away with using other brands without them being too conspicuous.
